Categories of the Awards

  • The Avocational Archeologist of the Year Award recognizes an individual avocational archeologist's outstanding contribution to Virginia archeology. This award may be a cumulative award recognizing efforts over multiple years, or it may recognize efforts within that year.
  • The Professional Archeologist of the Year Award recognizes an individual professional archeologist's outstanding contribution to Virginia archeology. This award may be a cumulative award recognizing efforts over multiple years, or it may recognize efforts within that year.
  • The Out-of-State Award is for outstanding service to Virginia archeology. This award is made to an individual who does not live in Virginia and who has contributed in an outstanding fashion to Virginia archeology.
  • The Hall of Fame Award is made to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the history of Virginia archeology. This is a posthumous award, awarded once every five years. The first recipient was Thomas Jefferson, recognized as the father of American stratigraphic archeology.
  • The Past President's Award is given to the immediate past president of the ASV.
  • The Site Survey Award is given to an individual and to a chapter that record the greatest number of archeological sites at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) within one year.
The DHR has initiated a database of archeological sites and standing structures for Virginia. Until DHR site records are largely updated, credit will be given for each site survey form updated to current standards. The DHR database is composed of site survey forms from the past fifty years of survey, and many are completely out of date. Normally, an award for the highest number of sites would be made on the basis of newly recorded sites.
  • The Sandra Speiden Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in anthropology, archeology, or history.
  • A Certificate of Longevity is awarded for continuous ASV membership in five-year increments.
